8k transmission mode

Post digital switchover, digital terrestrial television (DTT) is likely to be based on the 8k transmission system. The move means that old ITV Digital / On Digital and other 2k only set top boxes will not work after switchover. 2K only IDTVs can be updated with any current Freeview digital box or DTR.

A move to the 8k transmission system improves the robustness of the signal especially against impulse interference. It is also necessary in areas operating as Single Frequency Networks which can only use 8k transmission.

64QAM transmission mode

Ofcom has mandated that post digital switchover all multiplexes should adopt the 64QAM transmission mode.
