What is a Scart lead?

A Scart lead helps you connect your TV to digital TV equipment. It is a thick cable about 1/2" thick with rectangular blocks on each end. Most (but not all) digital boxes come with scart leads so make sure you check. You may have a TV that does not have a Scart lead connection point.

What if my TV doesn’t have a Scart lead?

If your TV does not have a Scart socket, you can purchase a digital set-top-box that connects to the RF input on your television. Thomson, Humax and Commtel are some of the manufacturers that currently produce these. An electrical retailer will be able to advise further on your options. The key thing is to ensure that the box has an "RF Modulator" which means it will work without a Scart connection.

Model numbers of STBs with RF Modulators include:

  • Thomson - DTI 1000; DTI 2002; DTI 2003; DTI 2300 (the Top-up TV receiver)

  • Humax - F2-FOX T; F2-100T; MG-TU 1; PVR-8000T; PVR-9200T; DV-100T

  • Commtel - SRT5885

Setting up your Digital Equipment

  1. Unplug your TV from the electricity supply and do not switch the digital box on again until you have connected all your equipment.
  2. Identify the various cables, plugs and sockets that you will need.
  3. Plug in the scart and aerial cables and reconnect all equipment to mains.
  4. Switch your TV on first, then the digital box. Then tune in the new digital channels.

What if my digital equipment stops working after switchover?

Technical changes to the transmitters will mean that a very small number of the earliest digital boxes and digital TVs, including all ONdigital and ITV digital boxes, will stop working at switchover. Click here for the full list of affected models including those that can be upgraded.
