Residential care and nursing homes: readiness for digital switchover

Digital UK and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) commissioned BMG Research to undertake a study to assess the extent to which residential and nursing care homes across the UK have prepared for “digital switchover” - the phased conversion of analogue terrestrial television services to digital services over the period from 2008 to 2012.

We are residents of a block of flats that uses a communial aeriel owned by a housing association.  Some of the residents have already purchased a digital television for Freeview and in anticipation of Digital changeover.  I have confirmed that there is no problem with the digital signal from your website by postcode.  However, the aeriel company serving the housing organisation will not accept that we would, therefore, need to look at replacing the existing aeriel, they insist the ‘boxes’ were changed four years ago and the fault could only be with the signal.  Can you confirm that, the communal aeriel may need replacing.  My postcode is CM2 0DW.  You would make some elderly people very happy if you could add your opinion to our argument.  Thank you.

I have entered your postcode into our postcode checker and it confirms that you should be able to receive a digital TV signal currently through an aerial. This is based on the assumption that you are watching the Crystal Palace transmitter. If this is not the case and you are watching one of Crystal Palaces related relay transmitters that are not carrying the digital TV services yet then you won’t be able to receive digital TV until after switchover.

Another reason may be that there are tall buildings or trees that are in the line of sight of the transmitter which our checker can not predict or that you are just on the edge of coverage. Currently the Crystal Palace transmitter is only transmitting the digital signal at half power due to the fact that we have to run analogue television alongside it. Once we turn off the analogue signal we can boost the digital signal.

Ask your housing association which transmitter your communal aerial is pointing at and what work they have had done to the communal aerial?  If you are continuing to have problems, then contact digital UK on 08458 455 455 and give us their details and we can speak to them on your behalf.

we manage a block of retirement properties in Dorset are you able to confirm for me that we would need a new communal aerial system, as local suppliers are telling residents the existing aerial which as been in place for many years will not need to be upgraded and that residents will only need to purchase a freeview box. post code area DT9 3EQ

Generally any system over 30 years won’t support a digital TV signal and all systems over 10 years will need to be checked.  The aerial itself may be good condition it’s the cables that carry the signals to the properties that may need to be replaced due to their age and condition.

Our postcode checker indicates that you receive a good digital TV signal now and you will continue to do so after switchover. It may be that the suppliers are advising your residents without realising that they live in a block with a communal aerial, where the outcomes are very different to if you live in a house.  Ask a registered digital aerial installer to check for you. Visit http://www.rdi-lb.tv to find an installer. If you are unable to find an RDI installer in your area ask one from an associated trade body such as the CAI or IDSC.
