What is the digital TV switchover?

What’s happening and when?
Starting in 2008 and ending in 2012, TV services in the UK will go completely digital, TV region by TV region with the exception of the Whitehaven area which will switch in October 2007. This process is called the digital TV switchover. The UK’s old television broadcast signal, known as ‘analogue’ is being switched off and replaced with a “digital” signal. Any TV that’s not set up to receive digital when the switchover takes place will no longer receive TV programmes.
What are the benefits of digital TV?
Compared to analogue TV, it brings many new ways to enjoy your TV including improved picture quality, on-screen TV listings, red-button interactivity and access services including subtitling and audio description.

Why are we switching over to digital TV?
The majority of UK homes already have digital TV on at least one TV set. However, one in four cannot receive it via their aerial and many still cannot receive channel Five. Only by switching off the existing ‘analogue’ broadcasting system is it possible to boost the digital TV signal and get it to parts of the country that can’t currently receive it.
