The challenge
If you own or manage a property that has a communal TV aerial system you will need to ensure that the building is set up to receive digital, otherwise residents may not be able to receive a digital television signal after switchover, even if they have ensured that they have the right equipment.
What is a communal TV aerial system?
A communal TV aerial system provides television to a number of households from a single aerial or satellite dish. Digital UK will be encouraging all tenants and leaseholders to check with their managing agent or landlord, that their system has been adapted or upgraded to receive digital TV signals and to see which services they can get through this system.
Delivering other services to the TV set
Preparing for digital switchover provides an excellent opportunity, particularly for housing organisations, to look beyond the provision of broadcast television services.
For example, it is possible to deliver internet access via digital television (if there is a telephone line or cable connection), broadband, local community TV,e-government and public sector services in education, health and employment.
Providing for such services today, and implementing them at the same time as the necessary digital upgrades, will be considerably less costly in the long run.
