Education facilities - schools, universities and colleges

To continue delivering TV services in teaching facilities, communal areas and student accommodation after the digital TV switchover, you will need to ensure that your TV sets are adapted (with a digital box) or upgraded (to a digital TV) to receive a digital signal. Where TV sets are used exclusively for playing DVDs or Videos, they will not require attention for switchover. In addition if you have a communal TV aerial system you may need to have it checked, and possibly upgraded so that it can support the digital TV signals.

Halls of residence

In the majority of cases students will be responsible for their TV equipment however, the property manager’s may be responsible for the TV aerial or communal aerial system.

Set-top aerials

In buildings where there is no aerial system, students may be relying on set-top aerials. Some set-top aerials are unsuitable for digital TV and may need to be replaced. The property manager may need to decide if students should continue to rely on set-top aerials after switchover or whether to upgrade the building with a communal TV system.

Internet Protocol TV (IPTV)

This is a means of delivering television services over a local area broadband network using web protocols. This service takes digital terrestrial or satellite signals and re-distributes them alongside other services such as video on demand and local TV channels.

Digital UK schools programme

Digital UK produces a cross-curricular teaching resource so teachers can engage 7 - 11 year olds (Key Stage 2) in the digital TV switchover. This will provide an opportunity for children in each TV region to be actively involved as switchover happens where they live. All Primary Schools will be contacted in the lead up to switchover in their region. For more information.
