To find out what services your mother will be able to receive at switchover, enter her postcode at digital UK’s postcode checker at http://www.digitaluk.co.uk. One of the benefits of digital TV switchover is that almost every household in the UK will be able to receive a digital TV signal via their aerial. If your mother receives a good analogue television signal currently then she should receive a good digital picture after converting her television.
If you choose to receive Freeview after switchover she could buy a new TV with a Freeview box built in known as an integrated digital TV (IDTV). However, if she is unable or unwilling to go to the expense of buying a new television then her current television can be upgraded to digital with a digital box. This is easily plugged into the TV set. Depending on the availability of services locally your mother may also have the option of getting digital TV through a satellite, cable or through her phone line. For more information visit http://www.digitaluk.co.uk
Your mother may also qualify for the digital switchover help scheme if she is over 75 or severely disabled. The help scheme will give her assistance to convert one television set to digital for a £40 fee, unless she receives Pension Credit, Income Support or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance in which case it’s free. If she is eligible, your mother will be sent information in the months before switchover where she lives.
