Individual Aerial Reception

An individual aerial reception system is a single TV aerial or dish feeding a single household.

Rooftop Aerials

Most existing rooftop or loft space aerials are able to receive digital TV services like Freeview, Top Up TV or BT Vision. If there is good reception now, it is unlikely to need replacing. To check if the aerial needs to be replaced or upgraded, download the aerial checker summary or our factsheet or visit teletext page 284 (p484 on S4C) where there is an aerial test for domestic aerials only.

Set top aerials

Some set-top aerials are unsuitable for digital TV and may need to be replaced, consider having all your TV sets connected to your rooftop aerial. If you receive a good reception now, with a set-top aerial it should continue to work.

Digital UK has commissioned Ricability, an independent consumer research organisation, to independently test registered digital TV products to recommend which are the best performing. The results of this survey have been published on the Ricability website.

Alternatively speak to an electrical retailer for advice.

If a new aerial is needed?

Never attempt to adjust your rooftop aerial yourself.

If the aerial needs to be repaired or replaced look for a Registered Digital Installers (RDI) with the ‘digital tick’ logo – it means they have been trained and security checked.

To find an RDI installer near you, visit rdi-lb.tv or call our helpline on 08456 50 50 50 . If you can’t find one, look for someone with Associate RDI, CAI Plus, or ask your local electrical retailer. Installations of a standard rooftop aerial are likely to cost £60-£180. Additional sockets cost around £45 each.

Who is responsible for the aerial?

Check the tenancy agreement, lease or licence first. It is likely that residents are responsible for maintaining and replacing the aerial as required. Tenants or residents may need to seek permission before starting any work under the terms of the agreement.

Help Scheme

Residents who are responsible for their own aerial and qualify for the Help Scheme may get additional help. For more information.
