Between now and 2012 all TV services in the UK will have gone completely digital. Analogue TV channels will be switched off TV region by TV region, transmitter by transmitter and replaced with digital TV services. Any TV set that’s not converted to digital when the switchover takes place will no longer receive TV programmes. This process is called digital switchover.
The digital switchover started in the Copeland area in Cumbria in October 2007 – read the Copeland report. The second UK switchover took place successfully in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders in November 2008. The Border TV region completed its switch to digital in July 2009 - read the Selkirk report.
A further 14 switchovers took place in the West Country, Wales and Granada in 2009 – to find out more take a look at the switchover map.
