Transmitters Explained

TV transmitters and why they matter.

  • Television is received through your aerial from a transmitter.

  • There are over 1,100 transmitters dotted around the country.

  • From 2008-2012, the transmitters will be switching over to digital - one by one...

  • Your television aerial is pointing at one of these transmitters.

  • That means your switchover date depends on the transmitter you are watching.

  • How many channels you receive and your signal strength will also depend on the transmitter.

  • Beams from nearby transmitters often overlap, so you may have a choice of transmitter to watch.

  • Changing from one transmitter to another may change the selection of channels you receive.

  • You usually point to the best one for you - however you may want to check.

  • If you need to change your transmitter, you'll need to contact a qualified installer and will need a new aerial.

So that's why transmitters do matter.
